How would you like to see watermarks?

12 years 8 months ago #136197 by bad mom
I know we are all photographers here, so how we see things may be different to the client. So lets think like we were the client. How would you like to see a watermark?

A watermark that is the entire image but about 40% opacity?
Watermark in the lower corner about 40% opacity?
in the lower corner not transparent?
or an embossed watermark?
or a about 40% opacity bar that goes across the bottom edge of the image, but your watermark is in the lower corner?

All these answers for me, depend on what the image is more.

If it's an stock image, I have no problem seeing watermark A
If it's a portrait I paid for I don't want to see any watermark or signature. I am fine with a signature on the back.
If it's any type of printed nature/wildlife image. No watermark on the print...however I don't mind the actual signature. (To me a watermark and signature is two different things) and in the lower corner.
If it's an image online any site watermark lower corner.

Hope that helps.

Like disabling right-click, watermarks are a deterrent to online theft of images. But do consider EVERYTHING you put on the web to be publicized. It becomes public property.

If you want a watermark to be successful it needs to be big and ugly. Otherwise, it just lets the thieves know who shot it.

Welcome to the internet.

If they are tastefully done, then that's no issue to me. It's the one's that go right across the center of photo and are in your face that get to me. I would rather see a photo with lower resolution and size than big ugly watermark.

That's so nice of you to be so negative. Maybe the OP wasn't so much concern as to find a way to keep people from stealing, but more of a way to put their mark on their pictures. You ever think about that? What is wrong with placing a name onto one's pictures? Even if they get stolen, it happens, but at least until their name is taken off the picture, everyone who sees the picture will know it who the photographer is.

You're right Luis. It did sound negative. I was only trying to make others aware of how OPEN the web is. Anything published automatically becomes public property, no matter what deterrents one makes.

My apologies.

Yes, if you are just wanting a "signature" on your photos, then a small one in a corner is best. There is no "correct" method however. Just what looks good to you.

Many of my students use both a dark one and a light one to apply to different images.

Disabled right click can be overcome in seconds.

Nah, it does' t become public property legally. Though people will use it without your permission, they don't have the right to it unless you say so.

As for them being ugly. Yes sometimes.

When they are tastefully tucked away in a corner they don't look bad and even sometimes look good. But when they are going across the center of photos with a 72 font size, yeah that is overboard and reason to click away.

Legally, you are correct, SN.

But let's say someone in Hong Kong is using your photo, and out of the billions of web pages available, you stumble across it. You can send them a cease and desist letter, but if they don't remove it, how much are you willing to spend to get it removed? The law is NOT going to protect you.

Oh shit.. you're in Hong Kong!!
