Define Photographer?

13 years 3 months ago #13645 by t.thomas
Just a thought. I define myself as a hobbyist with a camera, not a photographer.

I'm wondering what definition others put to the word PHOTOGRAPHER? Must one be a professional - i.e., earn money - to be caonsidered a photographer?

When does on progress from a hobbyist to a photographer?

Any thoughts?

My opinion is a simple one .... Once you press the shutter button and "take a photo" you become a photographer. If you are taking pictures or snapshots for things like your Facebook page .... wouldn't qualify as a photographer ... at least to my way of thinking.

I agree with Bob. Photography, like any other art, is a journey. Some of us, like me, have only journeyed a short time while others have dedicated much more time to the journey....All are photographers. In my humble opinion, very few of us have arrived to a point where we know it all.

It is what it is.

I always felt that some one who takes photos not pics. is a photograper photos take a thought process and a talent to compose wear pics are just snap shots of the moment. I would consideer my self as a beginer photographer becouse i work hard at makeing my photos. Thay may not be very good and my skill may be lacking but I enjoy doing it and thats whats important not what other pepole think a photographer should be :)

difficult one this, put a camera in someones hand does that make them a photographer, I think not, but once they move on and develop there skills, does that change things, I think so, if someone takes there camera and learns to develop a skill then that turns them into a photographer, doesnt it ?????

I agree with all of the definitions so far as to the difference between a "snapshooter" and a Photographer is someone who creates images that stir your soul, make you think, or just leave you in awe. A photographer is someone who dedicates themselves to the art and craft of photography in every sense of the word.
