Pictures you take can be added to portfolio?

Can you use client's pictures on your portfolio online? Do I need to get an agreement first from the client?

I think that's something that would usually be in the contract you have with the model you're shooting.

Among other things, it should say somewhere in there what they can use the photos for, and what you can.

If there is no contract ... It may very well still be OK, it's just better to have it in writing.

Cool. I've only been photographing my friends for free. I was just wondering what happen when I start charging people. Do you know a good link to get a good example of photography contract?

There are professional photography organizations like ASMP who have resources available. You're basically starting your own business and there's a lot to learn (I'm still learning myself). I bought a book from ASMP on business practices that was a helpful resource. The printable contract posted doesn't look too comprehensive, you may need to look at several and pick what works best for you. You'd probably be better off to do your 'homework' and do some research just starting out.

I shot photos of dasher ads etc. for a local hockey team for their marketing purposes; my own photos I can use but if I took a picture of a specific sponsor's name I wouldn't use that w/out permission.

Well as a general rule you have the right to use the photos for your purposes to a fair extent. One of the gray areas would be if you say printed the photos for advertisements in newspapers. As said you need to make up a contract stating your intent to use the photos, and if it was me I would allow them to opt out. Why you may ask, and I would say to promote good will with your clients. If you get one angry with you because you used a photo of them then word of mouth will kill you or get you more business. If you respect the fact they dont want their likeness all over the net, then they will be likely to recommend you to friends.
