Question about portfolio building techniques

12 years 8 months ago #137526 by Dan Dangerfield
I'm thinking about placing an ad in Craigslist offering a free hour portrait photo shoot. I would like to try to find some edgy looking people so was thinking about having their people responding email me an existing photo so that I can find the right "look" that I think would complement my portfolio.

Now what I'm wondering is if there are anything I should be aware of with my plan? I will have model release form signed by everyone and I plan to send each model a disc with their un edited photos.

What do you think?

Offer a free print, and half price on additional prints.

Spend as much time as they allow. You're learning too. It's a win-win.

Try to include as much variety as possible. Location and lighting changes, and if possible clothing changes. The more variety you have, the more print options they will have -- and more chance of bigger sales.

This is where you will begin to establish policies, too. What is acceptable to you and what isn't. What you are willing to sell (a CD of ALL pictures) or not.

There is no one method that works for everyone. You will make mistakes and pay your dues along the way. But, if you persevere, you can make a success of it.

Matthew :)

One last thing...

If you focus on your craft, the money will come. If you focus on money, your craft will suffer.

Allow yourself some time to succeed.

You could also look for building your portfolio on facebook. Many photographers find their models on facebook.
