As a pro, you aren't supposed to be using "photoshop" as a verb.
Ahem..........:P

My first impression was that it didn't look like a photo from the early 1900s. The closer you look, the more you can see where the curtain or whatever overlaps the sleeve/arm etc. Probably photoshopped, I know you can stack negs in an enlarger but I think you'd see the edges instead of the brushed look this has.

More on Stieglitz - www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/stgp/hd_stgp.htm . Got a catalog the other day from the Metropolitan, they have a book (exhibition catalog) of some of their photo collection entitled STIEGLITZ STEICHEN STRAND. Not waiting for Santa to bring it!

You can find the complete collection of Camera Work linked here:

www.petapixel.com/2011/09/08/camera-work...tographic-magazines/

The above shot of Stieglitz wasn't "photoshopped" in today's sense of the word (using a computer), but the negative (and the print) were obviously toyed with. Gertrude "retouched" some of her portraits heavy handedly.

To be displayed here, it was scanned, and possibly "retouched" in a digital program as well.

That would make sense, you can see where the background was brushed into/over the sleeve. Was this originally from a plate?? I don't know a lot about the plate process and don't know offhand exactly what years the dry plate, wet plate, tintype - all the early processes - were used.

Earliest camera I have is trademarked 1911 and is roll film (but Bostick & Sullivan sells one like it to use for tintypes). I found mine in a local antique shop, with film in it; just thought it was a cool camera. Real compact!! - at least for that time period, you push in the bellows and it closes up into a handy dandy 6" x 9" 'pocket' camera.

I don't have a problem with the manipulation. The problem is in presenting them as unmanipulated photos. Art in general has no rulebook. Wildlife photography magazines, books, and contests may set their own rules.
