Need some advice on low to the ground camera support

12 years 7 months ago #148500 by KZAM
How can I support my camera low to the ground for long period of time? My tripod isn't low enough, I'm looking for something 8 to 10" off the ground and stable. Ideally something that will allow me to pivot the camera with a longer lens on it. I'm going to try my luck with getting birds from a low vantage point.

Speaking of which is it safe to assume the best way to get the birds is to toss out some bird seed and just wait?

I'm appreciative of your help.

Walter

Sand bags work great or perhaps a pillow, camera bag or some other soft object.

Doing it the hard way... dig a deep hole and use the tripod half buried.

You might try priming the area ahead of time by feeding the birds regularly for a few days first.

That's what I was thinking, something like a bean bag or a sleeping bag or something that you can use to prop the camera in the position you want. I used a little box once and made a wedge out of it to point the camera upwards.

Tripod.

A tripod where you can extend the legs out, so the legs sit flat on the ground.
Pretty much about any of the tripods on this page.. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Tripod-Legs/ci/2636/N/4291079663

I didn't link any specific tripod, as many brands offer this option. I lower mine to the ground often for macro shots.

I would go with a table tripod. They are small and low to the ground.

I have one of those mention tripods, and I could never go back to a standard tripod.

Why not lay on the ground and use your arms to support the camera and shoot.

Guess it depends on if it's something you'd use again if it's worth buying another tripod since you said you already have one. Or see if it'd be better to figure out what you already have that you could adapt and improvise just to try it once.

I lay on the ground and use a tree branch, or a rock. Or my left hand because my arm isnt going anywhere being supported on the dirt.
