Have you ever shipped your equipment rather than bring on airplane?

We are planning a trip to family in Dallas Texas for Thanksgiving. Airlines these days are so uptight and charging for just about anything they can. I would like to bring my equipment down with me, but the airline is going to charge additional $50 for my camera bag, then I have to worry that they don't destroy it or steal my gear. However if I ship it Fed Ex, the gear is insured and get's there safely.

Thoughts?

Get a carry on sized backpack type bag and carry it on. No extra charge, they just gouge you on checked baggage.......;)

(I wouldn't let my gear out of my sight for a second)

Why so serious?

:agree: My backpack is my carry-on. And if you need lighting gear, look to rent.
Check the rates on FedEx and UPS AND their insurance rates/policies. Lost or destroyed equipment may be depreciated. Make sure you have ALL the facts.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I've done both. There are pros and cons to each, but like you I sort of trust the Fed Ex guys more than the airlines.

Once I had my checked suitcase ransacked because they spotted my Speed Graphic on the X-ray. To modern eyes I guess it looked like an unknown contraption. Not only did they break the latch on my suitcase, but of course no one had any idea how to open the Speed Graphic, and they ended up breaking a few parts on that as well. Ruined the camera for the vacation, and the airline never did reimburse me for any of the damages.
