I agree. I'd be surprised if it pushed over 14-16 mp to be honest.

Don't know who could afford such a camera. But if you look close the camera in the third picture particularly looks dusty or something (look at the finish). So Nikon made a prototype and left it sitting around collecting dust?? LOL And the hotshoe looks odd, sort of soft focus or something.

Nikon rumours isn't as bad as Canon rumours when it comes to posting rumours.

Canon rumours will post anything they get basically. Nikon rumours at least tries to filter it and therefore has a higher degree of accuracy.

However 36MP is crazy.

Just to put this in perspective. A workstation I edit on, is a 12 core, 64 gb Mac Pro.

50-60 MP RAWs with layers added in, in editing taxes the system pretty hard.

Take a normal laptop or desktop.

I really hope there's more to this story or people are in for a rude awakening.

I also hope it's not 36MP, that's insane.

However I wouldn't be surprised if they do it.

Bigger is always better: food, cars, boobs, bombs, etc... ;)

The vast majority of photographers don't need more than 8mp. Most of the lenses in use won't even resolve much more than that.

Talk about a photographer's dream come true. However I think it's too early to have a 36mp DSLR.

Am I missing something? Why would a 36MP Nikon camera be a mistake if the quality is par with other camera's that Nikon makes?

The question that arises is, will it have similar low light ability like the D700?

Maybe they meant 3.6 MP.

Few reasons:
1. More MP generally means more noise.
2. If they used less MP they could get less noise.
3. So many MP isn't needed unless you crop a LOT or bring really big.
4. The files would be huge and would take really amazing computer not to be crippled by them when editing.

That said, there is one situation where Nikon might not be as crazy as we all think.

Pixel Binning.

36MP means the D800 would have the same pixel density as the D7000. Which means the high iso noise would be ok, but disappointingly bad for the typical fx (and worse than the current fx cam lineup for sure).

However, if you could bin every other pixel and combine the data to make a sorta super pixel, you could get a 16MP file with D700 or better noise levels. Reduce that to 12MP and you've beaten the D3s perhaps.

This is a big if though. AFAIK no camera has pixel binning. Maybe Nikon will be first?

FYI you work out the size in MP of the D7000 if the sensor were increased in size to fx size by multiplying it twice by its crop factor (once of each dimention).

So 16x1.5x1.5=36
