The move to full frame

12 years 7 months ago #153228 by Big Kevin
I'm putting some consideration into moving to a full frame D700 and guess I'm on the fence and looking for some input. The D700 is suppose to be a much quicker camera, better low light and variety of other things. But the crummy part is many of my lenses for my D300 will not work on the D700 right?

You see I have a buddy who bought the D700 as a first camera about a year ago and thought he would be getting into photography. We'll it's a year later and the camera has been used just a few times. So he is considering trading me for my D300 plus $800 additional out of pocket from me. What do you think? My D300 has been used, and I have no clue how many photos are on it. I'm sure a lot. The D700 of his is virtually new. Matter of fact he stores it in the original box all the time.

For that price I would jump.

But also realize the files are bigger (more storage and more RAM may be needed). And if you need to swap out some lenses, get a few good primes. Most of those cover the FX format.

HTH :)

eta Offer $700 and settle for $750.00.

That is one of the things I'm putting some serious thought into is the cost of the FX lenses I will need. Those are pretty costly, could be reason why my friend didn't get into the hobby?

The three best primes are a 35mm, a 50mm and an 85mm. You'll take more professional looking pics with those than any other lens(es).

Start with a 50mm and add more as you go. Total cost for all three lenses is under $1000.00.

I am taking that step myself next year well towards the end of next year, two years of not working soon eats into your savings, but I will keep my D300 as a spare, my second shooter will probs end up using it anyway, then my D70 will be converted to IR for fun use, I estimate that £3000 should cover the camera and lenses I want, I also want a decent 100mm macro lens for my leisure photography, although it will be useful at weddings and portrait shoots.

First, your lenses WILL work on the D700, you just won't get the benefit of a 12 mp file, (if they are DX) more like 5.1, me thinks. Second, that's a good deal, get 'er done..............

Why so serious?

DX lenses on an FX body?

That's like putting a bumper sticker on a Ferrari.

:agree:
You are good to go for lenses. And for that price I would jump on it. What lens does he have on the D700? You may want to keep that too.

Maybe in your eyes. But for some people it's well worth it...dx lenses on a fx body...until they can afford new lenses.
