It depends on the amount of light pollution in your area. Here in Flagstaff you can do it in town pretty much. We are the first International Dark Sky city. But in most cities yes you need to go to a remote area away from the lights.

I bet you guys have super clear sky's there, Not much air pollution or excessive night time lights.

Google star parties or astronomy clubs in your area. I`ve been an astronomer since 1975, and have built 3 scopes!!!! Yes, it can be expensive, but there are ways around it!!!!!!

Most of the times yes we do have clear skies. Also it does not hurt that we are at nearly 8000 feet as well so we have less atmosphere to cut through.

I only have the my 8" f/6 that I built and have a 12.5 f/5 mirror I need to finsh, which is on hold till I retire. But I have helped grind several others including an 8" triplet refractor.

You have built 3 telescopes or you own 3? Any cool shots you have taken?

I`ve built the three that I own. All my astrophotos have been timed exposures on a tripod, not driven. I`ll have to dig them out!
