infant photography

My nephew is 2 weeks old and I would like to take some really cool infant pictures of him. Out of the two lenses I have.. 18-55 and 50mm. Which one should I use? And What kind of poses should I put the baby in? This is the first time photographing a infant, so I am kinda nervous.

The 50mm would be the best of the two lenses. You could photograph the baby in their crib, in a basket, put a cute wool hat on them etc... Google infant baby portraits and you'll find photos to give you ideas.

Thanks, I was thinking about using the 50mm, but wasn't sure. Because I was thinking I may need to use the zoom part on the 18-55.

If you need to zoom, just move your body. The 50mm is a faster lens, to where you can get away with using only window light or any indoor light.

Why wouldn't you try both lenses? Will this be your only chance? Also, don't pose the kid, put him on the floor and let him do what babies do.......:)

Why so serious?

Revised below... I thought your nephew was two months not two weeks - big difference!

Putting the baby on the floor and letting it do its own thing is not a good idea, it gives you whats known as the slug effect, as they crane their necks to lift their heads.
Seated, in a crib or a posing pad in someones arms etc, the bottom one here is on a cushion with a flufy cloth laid over it, dont forget to go in close for the small details like feet and hands

Sorry I misread it, I thought you said two months! I was thinking more of being on the floor with the baby... as an Early Intervention Specialist I was used to getting to their level and sometimes being on my tummy too. Probably it depends on what works best for each baby and family, that young you might be doing sleeping baby photos as much as anything.
