Tips for photographing stained glass?

12 years 6 months ago #157611 by Martin
When photographing stained glass, are you setting a custom white balance to nail the color just right? Last Saturday and Sunday the wife and I went around to a number of churches and was photographing the stained glass, but looking at the photos on the computer shows less vibrant colors?

Thoughts please

Hi Martin,

I had exactly the same problem. Have a look at this thread:
www.photographytalk.com/forum/tips-and-t...s-window-photography

I havent tried any of the ideas out of yet, going to have a go on Sunday when our local church is open.

The best thing you could do is shoot raw and edit the white balance in post processing.

Couldn't you set up a flash from the back side of the glass firing in the opposite direction? Wouldn't that make the colors pop?

That would work, but you will need either Radio Poppers or Pocket Wizards to make this work. Chances are you won't have line of sight to work off of.

I.ve found that the quality of the dominant light in the image is important. If there is strong sunlight filtering through the glass, the colors will be more vibrant. But if it's realtively dark outside, you need to underexpose to saturate the colors more. I hope to post some stained glass shots from Italy soon.
