How can a lens effect color?

12 years 6 months ago #158281 by Todd Knight
I have noticed that certain lenses will yield a slight color variation to other lens used on the exact same location and camera settings. I understand how a lens can be faster or slower than each other, but all things the same and camera showing correct exposure I don't understand how colors can be off, just by changing a lens? What is happening here from a technical stand point to make this happen?

I don't think I would have noticed till I had the photos side by side on the same monitor.

Probably something to do with the glass used and the lens design.

It's weird... but usually the differences are "fixable" in post (if RAW is used).

Different types of glass don't transmit the visual spectrum in exactly the same way. Beyond that there are lens coatings and adhesives between some elements that could possibly affect color.

I have an old Pentax Spotmatic lens that has a lens element made with some sort of slightly radioactive material. Over time it turns yellow. I only used it with BW film, and it was like having a built in #8 filter.

I've also noticed that a few of my Sigma lenses create photos that are more yellow than my other lenses do. It is easily corrected in raw processing, but comparing jpegs shot with different lenses and printed without corrections the color difference is obvious.

As Henry alluded to, the color variations are all due to the lens coatings used. As for the yellowing of older Pentax lenses, I believe it was the Thorium in the coatings that made it yellow with age.
