How do you answer other photographers wanting to tag along with you on wedding jobs?

I get a photographer every once in blue moon that wants to tag along with me on my wedding jobs for the experience. They require no pay, just want to learn. My concern is, that I don't know these people, and how do I know they won't try to steal my clients later down the line. If having them there opens up additional liability on me?

I just politely tell them I don't use volunteers at weddings I'm hired to photograph. I get lots of offers to assist for free, but I'd never bring anyone to a client's wedding that wasn't worth paying. I don't think its fair to the client to use their wedding for training. I've got a couple of friends who are pro photographers but don't do weddings in their own work that I occasionally hire to help me out.

I also find most photographers who haven't ever assisted before don't have a good idea of what is involved. They think it's going to be hanging out and taking photos. Once they find out that involves a lot more hauling and fetching than shooting, and they have to commit their Saturdays to me sometimes more than a year in advance they are usually less interested. I'm not going to take the time to train someone for a single wedding. If they want to be my assistant I need them for almost all the weddings I've got booked.

If they aren't dissuaded by this point I give them a little quiz. I ask them what a stop is, and grill them on using manual exposure, reading the histogram, raw, and the inverse square law. I find that's usually enough to stump 99% of the volunteers. :) The fact is there are plenty of folks available who have a very good grasp of photography fundamentals to choose from, and I'd rather pay one of them to help me than train a volunteer in the basics of exposure while working on the job.

I guess the trouble is it is a hard business to get into and people want to see what it's like in the real world.

From the Pro's POV I can understand you could be training the competition or not know who the person really is which could affect your professional image. It is definatelty a tough call...

If I ever progress to the point that I would like to shoot weddings although currently can't see that happening I would pay to acompany an experienced tog to see what is really like, as they say you can't buy experience (although inh this circumstance I would be trying to lol)...

Well, I find it kinda rude that you are not willing every once in awhile to take on a new photographer who is trying to learn wedding photography. There has been talk more then once here, a photographer asking about wedding photography and several of us members mention to first be a 2nd shooter when a professional photographer is shooting a wedding, to learn all about wedding photography. But, how can newbies do that, when there are photographers like you who do not want anyone tagging along and afraid they could one day steal your clients from you.

I would very much let the student tag along. We were all in that boat at some point. When we were new and knew nothing and was seeking help. If another photographer steals my clients from me, all that means is, I am not doing my job right..I am not keeping my clients happy...I need to change that.
