Offering incentives to clients for referrals?

Will you offer incentives to existing clients for them referring you new business? Are you soliciting this in any way? I would like more business, but trying to figure out best way to ask. Ask each client on phone or send out email to everyone?

Nikon 18-55mm VR, Nikon 70-200mm VRII f/2.8, Nikon 50mm f/1.8, Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, SB-700 & SB-800

Well I guess if I was needing to build a client base then I might offer discounts for referrals on their next session. But make it contingent that it be a referral that books.

Exactly, offer like a $10 coupon to be redeemed with something priced over $100, $50 off on $500 worth. Price according to what you normally charge.

or percentage works

I think it's a really good idea. It will bring back your current client for another session plus a new client. You can offer your client at the time of the shoot, or when you give them the prints.

If you have a website, advertise it on your site. Say something like,...book me and receive 10% off your next session when you refer a friend.

if not you can sometimes offer cash rewards and believe it or not the coupon can save them more but they take the cash because hey its CASH!

I offer a discount on an engagement portrait session to anyone who books me for a wedding. I give the same portrait session discount to previous clients that refer a wedding (booked) to me. I don't have a official discount for referred portrait sessions, but if someone were sending me a lot of business I'd come up with some way to say thanks.

Similar to HP, if I do a wedding + engagement session, I'll throw in 20x30 prints of any 2 shots from the engagement session, for the couple to display at their ceremony and reception. (I don't offer this on my cheaper half-day coverage option, only if they're paying for a full day.)

For referrals, I usually offer prints rather than future discounts. Size and quantity of the prints depends on what kind of referral. If it's a simple portrait session, I'll give the referrer a 5x7 or 8x10 of one photo. If they refer a wedding client, I'll give them a few prints.
