what balance for night photography?

I'm sorry if this seems like an easy answer to a stupid question, but what should my white balance be when shooting night photography? Like night skylines or star photos etc..

I believe shade white balance is what you will be using.

It always depends on what your light source is and how you want it to look. Moonlight is reflected sunlight filtered through atmospheric pollutants so even with this one subject the answer might vary a lot. Shoot in RAW and select your options later in post.

I'll just keep mine in auto most of the time, if I want some more warmth I'll adjust the white balance manually.

I shoot raw and leave it on auto wb, and then adjust to taste by eye in the raw processor. If you are shooting jpeg I would read up on how the various wb settings affect the color, and do some test shooting. You may find a setting you prefer over others. Artificial light sources come in a variety of colors (orange, yellow, green, pink...), and if in your scene they may influence your choice. If you want to match the effects you'd get from color film just set wb to daylight.
