Question for the male wedding photographers

12 years 5 months ago #169117 by Foggy
OK, this might be a odd question. But I'm going to ask. I've shot weddings before and always had my wife with me as a second shooter and she would always take the photos of the brides getting into their dress. Well my wife is heading to her sisters for a month to help out with some family issues. In the mean time I do have a wedding coming up and just started to think about photographing the bride getting into her dress. For obvious reasons, how do you stage this?

It depends on the type of shots you usually have done and the individual bride. If the bride is comfortable with you taking the usual shots then I say go for it or have the maid of honor help you out during the shoot by helping the bride. I would expect some decorum in your usual shots- nothing too racy anyway so it should not be a problem if you explain the situation to the bride well in advance and have her approval.

You are in the same position as I have been several times, all you do is talk about it with your bride, ask her wether she will be embarrased if you are there to take photos of her putting her dress on, its a fifty fifty thing with some brides saying just photos of them once they are in the dress and of them having their makeup done etc and some who will say to you "get on with it I dont mind", its all about communication.

"A good photograph is one that communicate a fact, touches the heart, leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it. It is, in a word, effective." - Irving Penn

I see your points. I want them to be comfortable and natural with me being there. People act different in front of a camera, something like this they might act even differently which can take away from the photo.

I discuss it with them ahead of time in planning meetings. I encourage brides and any of the other ladies to let me know when they need some privacy. I step outside for a moment, and they call me back in when they are comfortable with me returning. Sometimes brides are wearing fancy lingerie, but more often these days I find they are wearing "control" under garments such as girdles and Spanx pants. They usually aren't very interested in getting photos of these. I step outside, and they bring me back in to photograph the lacing, zipping, etc... of the wedding gown.

I think most brides won't really mind, (as long as you are not photographing her completely nude to getting clothed). Brides want every single moment taken and if that requires a male photographer to photographer her putting on her wedding dress, so be it. It happens all the time, because most wedding photographers are males.
