How do I take a good close up shot of a face? I tried so many times to take this shot of my girlfriend but every time her nose become bigger than other parts of the face. Maybe becuse nose is always closer to camera lens.

Our tendency for beginners is to stand really close when we want to get a close up shot of someone's face, when in reality we should be stepping back and zooming in really close. I guess it has something to do with when the camera is close to the object your trying to shoot, the wide-angle lens is exaggerating the distance from the tip of the nose to the rest of the face, so in essence makes the nose look bigger.

Maybe that's where I am going wrong. I am like on top of her getting this picture. So I need to step back a bit.

For a more accurate perspective try using a longer lens and getting "in close" from further out. Imagine a shot of a man backlit with a rising sun. Shot form a few feet away the sun will appear much smaller than the man in comparison. Take the same shot with a long lens from a hundred yards away and the man will now fit into the disc of the sun. This same perspective shift will happen on a smaller scale. In this case the sun is your GF and the man is her nose...

To avoid the results of lens distortion, one usually shoots at around 80mm focal length, which means a 50 to 55mm lens on a crop body digital camera or an 85mm lens on a full frame camera.

Then remember that the point is to flatter the subject by means of your shot, so you need to look at the face closely and think about how you are going to de-emphasize such things as perhaps a long nose, mole, high forehead, pointed chin, bloodshot eyes, very thin or very round face etc.

Some of this needs to be done in the planning stage as in the use of make-up, lighting, camera angle etc. and some by postprocessing. You will need to be quite practiced in portrait postprocessing to really do it well, without overdoing it.

A shorter focal length lens (wide angle) increases the apparent size of closer objects relative to farther objects. You should use a longer than normal focal length for your camera format. For a close up portrait of the face with a minimum amount of distortion try the longest focal length you have available. On a 35mm format camera I would want to use something longer than 100mm.

EDIT: Actually I should clarify, it's not the focal length, but rather the distance to the subject, but if you are filling the frame with a wide angle lens then you are very close.
