level on camera

The other day I was out taking pictures and I ran across a photographer who had a level on top of his camera. I've never seen this before. Do cameras come with levels? or are they bought separately? Anybody here use one?

My camera has a level built in. This would be really handy if you are shooting a wide panoramic. I seldom use it as there are a lot of clues available most of the time.

Thanks. Where can I buy one? Are they expensive? It seems like every little tool in photography is expensive.

You can buy them at B&H for around $25.

Any camera supply source will have them. They usually aren't too expensive. There is a variety of cheap ( <$5 ), small leveling tools available at your local hardware store, although they won't come with a hot shoe foot so you'll have to figure out how to attach them.

Thanks, maybe I'll pick up a small level at the hardware store, mount it somehow and see if I like having one before buying the real thing.

I like stick-on velcro for attaching things. You could even attach a level to something that does fit in the hot shoe.

Look in the key chain section of the hardware store. I always see a cube level keychain for about a $1. Just take the chain off.
