Looking for a good low light point and shoot camera

13 years 3 months ago #19000 by shel_phish
I'm looking to purchase an inexpensive point-and-shoot digital camera for taking pictures at concerts and other low-light events.

I borrowed a friend's Canon PowerShot SD700, but I wasn't happy with the results. Any other suggestions would be helpful.

you could try kodak easyshare but you might want to be closer to the concert to take thoses kind of pictures last year i went to a concert also and i took my camera and i didnt get very closer to it that for sure i still think canon might be better for you. what did you think of that canon one and what setting did it have on it?

Define "Inexpensive".

IMHO the Canon S95 is one of the best value for money cameras you can get and it's good in low light too.

I have and would recommend the Nikon Coolpix S8100. There are some very good Canon ones also, and Nikon has a better one "Coolpix P7000"

Mate, generally speaking Canon do P&S better than Nikon. I love Nikon, but the G12 beats the P7000 IMHO. :D

And this could be better than both.....

Remember Shel-phish, dont always blame the camera, your poor results could have been caused by your lack of knowledge of that camera, lots of cameras nowadays are good in low light but you have to know how to set them correctly, perhaps a camera course would help, even point and shoot cameras need a bit of knowledge

Panasonic has been my favorite compact (have/had 3) for the past few years. Never had a problem and seem to have a faster shutter than most.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

yeh Honestly Panasonic make nice cameras (mainly because they're cheaper versions of leicas).

I could have gotten a Panasonic over the Canon S95. But the S95 is just better for my wife (it's smaller).

Both are great.

If you are any distance from the stage, good sharp shots are going to test a photographers skill as they would have to rack the zoom all the way out & since tripods/monopods are not allowed, VR or IS will only help your movement not the performers. Since performers tend to be pretty mobile, it can be a daunting task. If you crank up the ISO to get a faster shutter speed, the resulting noise levels are unwanted...Answer, get seats up front & hope that tall people are not in front of you...Forget taking a DSLR into a concert venue as well...

Here are some compact cameras with long zooms that are good in low light:

Kodak Z950 - a real bargain 10x optical zoom
Nikon S6000 7x
Panasonic ZR3 8x
Panazonic ZS5 12x
Nikon S8000 10x

Any one of them would be a great addition to your equipment list.
