Terrible and predictable news. Ironic that Kodak invented the digital camera.

It is what it is.

I think this is like the major auto makers a few years back, there is no way a iconic name like Kodak will die off, someone will step up to save the company.

Canon EOS 7D|Canon EF 70-200mm F/2.8L USM |
Canon EF 50mm F/1.4 USM |
(2) Canon Speedlite 480EX II

From what I understand they have filed for protection against bankruptcy rather than bankruptcy itself so although not looking good the fat lady isnt singing just yet

Yes, its a filing for protection. However a federal trustee is appointed to sell off assets to pay off the debt, including many Kodak owned patents. The fat lady is warming up.......:(

Why so serious?

Kodak owns patents that would blow your mind.
up until Fuji came along in the late 70's nobody challenged their chemical processes. It didn't pay. Every time somebody did, Kodak would bring out another process and force the 'finishers' to buy all new equipment.

They had a monopoly, and they were MERCILESS.

They worked very hard to maintain it.
They own the patent on digital, but they weren't as aggressive in protecting their advantage in this venue as they were with film.

They can stop making ALL PRODUCTS, and they will still have a substantial cash flow due to those patents.

I miss Kodachrome, but i don't miss ONE COMPANY calling the shots for an entire industry. They had that advantage for nearly a century. and they abused the hell out of it. They flirted with suits for many years in regard to allegations of monopoly, justifiably.

They lost the ability to control the industry and were lax in responding to that loss.

The money they lost with the demise of the industrial 'photo lab', was enormous. The equipment in the drug stores and big box stores is generally Japanese.

Yes, it's a tremendous loss.

Am I sad about it?

No.

It's a much healthier industry and it's ruled by the MARKET now.

I hope Kodak can regroup and move forward out of bankruptcy. They developed many innovations over the years but from what I remember reading there were some unwise decisions make in more recent years.

Besides Fuji other companies that have been making film are Efke, Adox, Foma, Ilford, Rollei/Agfa, Lomography, and the Impossible Project (for Polaroids).

I think if Kodak goes out of business there will be someone else to step in. I think Polaroid already figured out that about the time they decided to stop making film, there was a market for it after all; they're partnering now with the Imposible Project. It may be more niche than mainstream but there's apparently enough of a market for to be profitable.
