Umbrella and colored gel question

12 years 3 months ago #192899 by Mayo
I just ordered my first umbrella and some colored gels along with some other lighting gear. I was just wondering: Can I have a gel on my flash and fire the flash through the back side of an umbrella and still see the effects of the colored gel that's mounted on my flash?

Depends on the gels, but regardless some of the color will bleed on through with no problems

Whether you're using the 'umbrella' as a diffuser or a reflector, is irrelevant. It can do both jobs.

The COLOR of the light (or temperature) should be unaffected.

The type of gel I use depends on what type of modifier I'm using. I like the Roscoe gels for my Canon Speedlites if I'm using bare flashes. I keep a 1/4 and 1/2 CTO gel taped to the side of my flashes with gaffer's tape at all times. That way I'm never without it and that seems to be the gels I use most. I also like the Honl gels and the speedstrap if I'm using a gel inside of a softbox or shoot-thru. Which, to answer your question, does a beautiful job of matching the color temperature of the flash to the ambient light. The Honl gels are a lot bigger than the Roscoes, and if you have the velcro strap all the way at the light end of the flash, you can attach the velcro strip along the outside edge of the strap, forming a "bubble" if you will. This increases the appearant size of the light by about 50%, provides a little bit of diffusion and helps eliminate hot spots.

My best picture? I don't know, I haven't taken it yet.

Once you color the light it stays colored. If you shot it through or bounced it off another color it could change.
