How long do you keep wedding photos?

How long do wedding photographers keep negatives or original shots?
If the client got what he/she asked for, do you expect them, or another relative, to come back a month, a year, 2, 5, or 10 years later to ask for re-prints?
Can anyone ask for prints and videos of the wedding? Or does it have to be the person(s) who hired the photographer?

How long one keeps their photos all depends on the photographer. Everyone is going to have different answers. For right now, I keep all my photos. I imagine anyone can contact the photographer to order reprints. That also depends on the photographer, I'll sell reprints to anyone as long as they show some kind of proof that they are related to the bride/groom.

Photos can be backed up to DVD or large hard drive. The DVD has a limited "shelf life" but consider the case where a house fire destroys the client's prints and album. Your files would be a "life saver".
Since the client paid for the shoot, it would be up to them who could order prints. Don't want them used in a negative way.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Unless the photographer sold the B&G the copyrights, or has a clause stating otherwise in the contract the B&G signed, the photographer (being the copyright owner) can legally sell the images to anyone, and for any purpose, the photographer wants to sell them to, with no input from the B&G.

I keep negs and proof books for just such an occasion as house fire or water damage for the bride and groom but also for my portfolio

Thats entirely false. Without a model release those photos cannot be used for anything by anyone... including the photographer. It falls under Privacy law, not Copyright law
