When asked about the cost of all your camera gear, what do you say?

I never say specifically. I tell them I wanted equipment that I could neither justify nor afford, so I found another way to get it. I learned how to repair them and built up my equipment that way. They usually say wow, and then draw their own conclusions on it's assumed value. :)

It would depend on the person asking. I would give a general "a lot" answer to a random person. However, if it was a friend or family member, I would give an estimated truthful answer.

I look at them, make them feel uncomfortable, then yell "none of your f#$%ng business!!!!!". Then I smack them open handed and tell em' to go grab me a Coke!

But really, I just say, "Gosh, I'm not really sure... a lot though!'

I tell them more than I have in my pocket right now. I have had some mention that it looked expensive in a I want it kind of way, but then they see my .45 on my right side and the conversation dies. I wear my camera strap from the right to the left so my right hand is free unless Im shooting either.

I must be weird. I just tell them the truth (which depends on what they are asking about, of course).

If I'm in a weird situaiton where I don't want to tell them for some reason, I just say "a lot" but my default answer is to just tell them the truth.

Yeah, but then it looks like you are bragging about the cost. NON photographers would be floored with the cost of photography gear.

As others have replied, for me it usually depends on the situation. I get asked the question a lot! Must have something to do with dragging around a large piece of "white glass" or two.

I usually ask the person if they are just being polite or if they are really interested. If they show real interest I will tell them the truth, by first stating that photography is an expensive / addictive hobby (for me anyway). And then let them know that I have $25,000+ worth of camera gear (insured value).
