Over charging camera battery by over night charging it?

12 years 3 weeks ago #221747 by Justin
If you charge your camera battery over night, will it damage the battery? Batteries generally take a couple hours to fully charge. So your talking 6 hours of extra charging. Will this harm my batteries?

Very nice to meet you!

Will not hurt at all, mine are plugged in for days, unless there is an issue with your charger... :beerbang:

It could in theory damage your battery in some way... I mean the possibility is there. Maybe leaving it on will attract a moth that will lay its eggs on the battery and then a caterpillar will appear and breath fire on your battery causing it to explode.

IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU!

Or you could not worry about it like everyone else. ;)

I just knew there was a reason why my charger came packed in moth balls... :woohoo:

Leave it to Chas. Doubt it could damage it anymore than the cell phone, etc.

That depends entirely on the battery charger. If its a smart charger, bar any technical issues it should not cause any damage to the battery if left on

If its a dumb charger... then all it does is feed current for a set amount of time (eg 12 hours). If you put batteries that are still at 50% capacity and you let the charger go for the full amount of time that the charger is active for, then you run the risk of damaging those batteries. But seeing as how these chargers shut off automatically after, for example, 12 hours, then leaving it in for 24 should not make a difference.

Most of the new camera batteries are chipped and tell the charger they are full which is why the lights stop blinking on the chargers.

I've kept mine on the charger over night plenty of times, no problems here.

I've kept mine on the charger over night. Heck, there have been many times I forget the battery is there, untill I go out to shoot.

Now are you draining your battery down completely before recharging?
