Smugmug or Photoshelter for selling photos?

12 years 3 days ago #226481 by Francis
I would like a site that I can sell digital prints, like Getty Images. Will either Smugmug or Photoshelter allow me to do this? I want this to be hands free so shopping cart connected to merchant account or paypal will be needed too.

I'm trying to find out who takes less of your profit?

Yes Smugmug does this on their Pro accounts. You set the price per print which is on top of their charge and they handle everything else. They will directly pay you as well and they do send out 1099s at the end of the year.

No Smugmug has a set price for them handling the operation, so you make your price as an add on to that. Your clients make the order and smugmug handles the printing, shipping, and such. They also have other things they print on or offer besides photos.

I looked into photoshelter a couple years ago. I also wanted to sell similar to like getty images. I like everything photoshelter has to offer. However it's a bit too pricey for me. I've never been found of smugmug.
Keep in mind, there is also Zenfolio that allows downloads of digital prints.

That is considerably more than Smugmug, has there been a side by side comparison between the two? I've always thought price was a good indicator of quality and features. There is a large spread between these two companies "pro" price points. Is Photoshelter that much better of a site?

(2) Canon 7D, Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, 50mm f/1.4 USM, 85mm f/1.8 USM, Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM, Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6

Girl friend of mine just switched from Smugmug to Photoshelter a few months ago. I do believe she found a coupon code. I'll need to find that. But from what I can recall there are more options with Photoshelter.
