Selling old gear online vs donating for tax write off

11 years 11 months ago #237762 by Freshstart
I have a old Nikon D70 and was looking online and see these cameras being sold for $150 to $200. Although I don't use this camera, it was a spare behind my D300. I was thinking about selling it considering I just don't use it, but after seeing what they are going for I'm thinking it might be better off to donate for higher write off value at the end of the year. Anyone know if I would get more from donating it?

Or do you suggest to keep it for the spare?

Good question for your tax person. If not, might be worth to keep just as a spare.

The D70 is an awesome camera, so I would keep it.

Personally, after coming off of 7 months with no digital camera body that autofocuses with my growing collection of AF lenses, (they won't AF on my wife's D60), I would keep the D70 as a second body until I got a newer body and THEN have it IR converted. :)

It is what it is.

How easy is it to convert to IR?

Nikon 18-55mm VR, Nikon 70-200mm VRII f/2.8, Nikon 50mm f/1.8, Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, SB-700 & SB-800

Selling would be better than donating it for a tax write off as the credit would be small ...I'd say keep it as well as a 2nd camera. I have a D70s as a 2nd camera after my D300. I keep different lenses on each. Don't forget that the D70's 1/500 th sync speed is a very useful tool

I agree with not donating it. You really do not get that much from doing it at tax time.

I just thought of something, can you get a tax credit for an item you donate, if you already claimed it as a business expense when you bought it ?
