Will a D5000 camera take black and white photos?

I'm at work, and was looking at some B&W photos in the gallery and I really like how these look. Do I need a special filter to take shots like these?

Is B&W the same as "mono"?

Take pictures as normal, convert to black and white in photoshop by using a black and white adjustment layer.

Yes it will shoot in B&W but as Scotty said it is better to do it in Post Processing. The reason is if you shoot in mono then you dont have the color information to work with later. Also it is best to work with the RAW file in ACR for Adobe products. Then you can use the color channels to adjust the look. Also try to get the shot right in camera because as with any blown image you cant use B&W to fix bad color exposures.

:agree: Actually, I never use the in camera B&W or sepia. I shoot everything in color and convert in photoshop.

I've shot in B&W in camera (USING RAW, MUST USE RAW) and Lightroom will just change it back into Colour (which I then turn into B&W later).

Does that make sense? Shooting RAW will give you this option.

You can generally set most cameras for monochome or B&W or whatever you want to call it. But the trick is to remember to set it back for color. Which is easy to forget. So shoot in color and edit later in some editing software program.

The problem with setting to monochrome in the camera is you can't get back color you never had to begin with. You always have that option when doing it post-process.

Sure... this one was taken in RAW (in colour in fact) and converted to B&W.
