Volunteering work to magazine to get foot in door?

Have you tried volunteering time to a magazine to get your foot in the door with them? There are a couple magazines I would like to approach and wondering if magazines will bite on this sort of relationship proposal? I'm sure others must have tried this before.

Nope never have, and do not think I would. The problem for many pros right now is that many publications are going through stock photo sites to find material to use. Hard copy printing at this point is a dying medium with the advent of the interbutz, and mobile devices. Granted there are still old timers like me who actually like to hold an actual book or magazine, less so the mags though, but books I am not a Kindle fan.

Here's my philosophy on this sorta thing.

Does the company make money? If yes, then I should get paid.

Buy a book called THE PHOTOGRAPHERS MARKET . It comes out yearly and lists publications and their submission guidelines. I would start there.

Excellent book to have. I don't have the 2012, but do have the 2011. It's like a photographers bible

Google "lies photographers are told". Working for free now for a promise of paid jobs in the future is usually in the top 3.

Only thing I volunteer for is family photos or charitable causes.

Only work for free if you plan to continue to work for free. If you set your value at free, why would they be willing to pay you for additional work later? You already told them your work was worth nothing. A lot of jobs come from word of mouth, and when other clients come to these magazines asking for a photographer what do you think they're going to tell them?

"We know this great photographer. They did it all for free." Then all if your incoming clients are expecting that - free.
