How did your clientele change when you raised your rates?

I'm finalizing some new pricing and some what relieved I'm finally getting around to this. I've not changed my prices in years (seriously it's been nearly 6 years) and I feel it's long over due. I'm raising rates by solid 30-40% across the board. I know I need to raise my rates to match my experience and not to under cut myself. But I have to say I have some second guessing is going on here. I think thats just fear of changing, but I'm curious how some of my long term clients will react to this. Will I start attracting a new group of clients?

I'm not sure, I guess we will see. But I did want to ask your opinion on the above question. Did your clientele change? How often are you updating your prices?

I update my prices yearly, if not more than that. Over the past few years, it's been every 4ish or so months, though they've been at their curret levels for about 9 months now.

That allowed me to go up incrementally and not completely price myself out of my referral base with one big huge leap.

As I've moved up, I've noticed changes -- dresses get nicer, venues get nicer, planners become more consistent, etc. Personality-wise, however, I think we still attract the type of personality that is drawn to our imagery... which is to say, my clients are as cool as they ever were. Creatively, they've become much more trusting... I no longer even get requests for 'shot lists' and I hear "whatever, I trust you..." way more than I did in my cheaper years.

The price changes that I made have always been pretty much gradual so there really hasn't been any drastic change in clientele or complaints about price. Now if I were to compare my clients today to when I first started, then yes there is a difference!
