NY Times is featuring a portrait photographer

Well congrats to Rineke Dijkstra (the photographer) for getting featured here. Honestly I have to say I'm on the fence about her photography.

Take a look: www.nytimes.com/2012/07/06/arts/design/r...v2Zc10KCVF8nE6C0nL9Q

What do you think?

Some of the beach portraits kind of grab me. I'm pretty apathetic about the indoor portraits. Of course these are not meant to be viewed in the manner presented here. It says the prints are almost life size, and I've often experienced a dramatic change of opinion when seeing the real deal in person rather than web previews.

I'm going to agree with Henry, I'm sure looking at these on the web are the best representation of her work.

Odd article. Talks a lot about her portrait work. But the only image(s) shown are a special project. And projects always play by their own rules.

I have actually seen the second one, with the striped suit. I am left unmoved by the austerity of the technique and lack of empathy, and put off by the too heavy reliance on personal projection to ascribe some significance. The comparison to full length portraits by Goya and Manet provides new meaning to "hyperventilating bloviation", and a good belly laugh...

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I think her success should give enormous encouragement to all budding portrait photographers out there!

I believe he in fact stated quite the opposite of that.

As for her work, i dont find it particularly stunning or moving based on the photographs in the article. But somewhere someone must... art is subjective.

Those photos really don't jump out at me. But good for her on the exposure.

Very nice to meet you!
