Do you specialize in a paticular area of photography?

How many of you focus on a particular area of photography? Weddings, Portraits, Newborn, etc.?

Focusing on an area allows you to master it quicker, but also could limit your income potential. Mastering it could result in higher rates you are able to charge which off set less jobs. Just curious how close my thoughts are here?

I have chosen to specialize in sports photography but not to the exclusion of other opportunities. I have a certain level of mastery in areas other than hockey but that is where I am most successful. I do family portraiture, weddings, and landscape photography as well. My hockey work is published regularly so that is where my main area of expertise lies.

Photography isn't my full time job, but when I am shooting for clients it's almost always wedding or engagement photos. I also end up doing some graduation portraits every year, which in technique isn't entirely different from engagements -- except that it's generally just one person instead of two.

When I'm shooting for my own enjoyment instead of a client, that's a whole other story! That's mostly landscapes, because I love shooting them and IMHO they tend to be my best work.

These days it's pretty much just portraits and wedding work. That's all. Or you can say who ever has money to spend on photography!

Not really to say, I'm open to exploring other venues, there are a few lines I won't cross. But for the most part, if it's ethical and paying or for a good charity I'm game.

I'm a newbie compared to many of you. So at this point I'm not focused on any area. I'm just looking to gain as much experience as I can.

No not really. I happen to be best at event photography. I feel I need to improve my studio photography (I always second guess myself in that situation. I'd rather take a photo in a second than pose it and take a long time working it out and editing it in post). I enjoy the occasional cityscape and a bit of street photography.

If I had to pick my speciality it would be event photography though (as I alluded to above).

When I first got started I was all over the place, when I started doing portraits and weddings the hobby side slowly died down. These days it's pretty much just weddings and portraits. When I do have a few minutes to spare, I'll get out and do some nature or landscape photography.
