Shoot and burn wedding photography request

11 years 7 months ago #254232 by Martha
I know this isn't preferred and frowned upon. What if you have a client and the only option that they are requesting from you would be to shoot and burn? I got a call from a potential client yesterday who has a very limited wedding budget and wants me to just "be there to take photos with a professional camera" and put the photos on a CD she goes. I'm guessing she has spoken to other photographers as she said the photos don't need to be RAW format JPG will be fine.

So should I walk, or should myself and my 'professional camera' be there for this small job?

Personally I wouldn't touch it. However, you don't mention what pay is offered.....

Why so serious?

Well you really have to decide if it is worth it to you. Also I hope you will have a contract for the job. In this case I would specify that the results will not be your usual standard because of inability to post process the images. I would still shoot RAW + Jpeg, and select the Jpegs to burn to the disk. Then you can do your post work and use them for your portfolio.

This sounds like wanting more for less. They might be shopping around, this seems like they want just about anybody with a camera. Maybe they're not thinking about the amount of time or the skills involved. I don't do weddings but to cover any event or do any photography work I'd expect to be compensated for my time.

If you're considering this maybe you'd need to think about some lower cost options for those on a budget. I'm not sure what would work best but I'd be thinking about reducing the amount of time involved, maybe photograph just the ceremony and part of the reception? and not cover all the pre-wedding prep, the shoes, the rings, etc. etc. etc. Maybe offer something that includes just a certain number of jpeg images that you've processed? a few prints? a small album? something along those lines.

I don't think it's really your problem what their budget is, anyone planning a wedding would need to prioritize and budget for the venue, food, dresses, etc. - and the photography - if they don't 'have money' for photos but want pictures taken, then that's up to them to rethink their budget and adjust what they're spending on other expenses.

I feel like wedding photographers thrive on referrals. I chose my wedding photographer because my friend used him for her wedding and I liked him. Then my coworker hired him based on my recommendation. Then another mutual coworker hired him because she'd been at both of our weddings. So that one wedding yielded him three additional weddings (that I know of).

For that reason alone, I don't think it's wise for wedding photographers to shoot and burn. When someone asks her who took her photos do you want your name and reputation associated with photos that weren't subjected to your post processing prowess? Do you want her to refer you as a photographer willing to shoot & burn on the cheap? Don't just look at this in relation to this one gig. Think about the precedent you're setting too.

If she really wants a deal, I'd suggest she locate someone who is building his/her wedding portfolio.
