Photographing cars and license plates

11 years 6 months ago #258786 by iGeek
I was warned to stop taking photos of cars this morning. There were 5 sports cars in a parking lot of Ralph's supermarket and I was stopped by someone who said taking photos of cars and specifically their license plates was against the law. I've never heard rubbish like this. Is there any truth to this?

You don't say what country you're in, and laws will vary. In the United States I'm pretty sure that's incorrect. Publication of said photos, however, would best be accompanied by blurring or removal of the license plate information (just like on Google street view).

:agree: that's what I do. I've gone to car shows and that's what I'll do if I'm publishing the photos.

Wasn't me :)

You might want to make sure, it wouldn't surprise me if the people's republic of California now requires a license or permit to photograph in Ralph's parking lots..... :P

Why so serious?

Yeah I could see that there. But in reality no it is not illegal to photograph them, it may be illegal to post the plates online, or in print though. Also who was telling you that you could not? If it was a Security Guard then he could be correct in one respect. That is if you were on Ralph's parking lot while doing so, if you were on the sidewalk going past Ralph's then tell them to go pound sand. The first is a case of you being on private property in which case they can tell you no, the second is you being on a public sidewalk, and shooting into the parking lot. This is much like mall and store policies of no photography on their premises, they can restrict it, fact is it is their right to do so. They are private property, with public access for the purpose of doing business. This is where most people get the Photographers Rights screwed up.

I think too it's about usage, what you'd do with photos of someone's car; if it's just for your own collection that's one thing, but I don't know what would be involved in using photos of someone's car/property by posting them online, selling prints of them, etc. I wouldn't go by what somebody in the grocery store parking lot said unless as mentioned it was someone from the store. I have seen signs that you can't take photos of merchandise inside a store, it's their property and up to them to determine. And it seems like I've seen on TV that license plates are often obscured so they're not readable.

I've never had any issues with people even asking me. I like the Good Guy car shows, never once has anyone made a fuss about that.
