Working with model agencies

It just dawned on me this weekend that working with model agencies would be a good source of portrait work. Before I spend to much time building a list and researching what companies are around, I wanted to see if anyone works for a model agency and how they go about either hiring a photographer or getting on their preferred list of photographers they recommend to upcoming aspiring models who seek a portfolio?

FWIW, models don't need portraits. They need fashion shots, which is a whole 'nother area of photography.

[reality as I see it]
I will posit that it's unlikely you're going to be able to hook up with an agency without a portfolio of quality compelling work, even for new models. Suggest you start by enlisting some friends that can be considered "eye candy" and start building your port. Check out Model Mayhem to find locals that will do TFP work to increase the breadth of your images. Your skills are most likely going to need to be demonstrable before you get anyone's attention.

:agree:
Agencies will let you hire models, but as far as a list of preferred photogs that is usually a clickish bunch. Most agencies have their own shooter, in house, or some friends of theirs who do the work for them. Fashion is one of the worst areas to try and break into because of its clan structure.

Where are you all hiring models? Please don't tell me Craigslist  Is there a site that has photos that you can look at ahead of time of the models?

Again, Model Mayhem is probably your best bet.

That and One Model Place is another. It is not as easy as MM to search on. Both also require that you as a photographer submit some form of fashion shots, they cannot be portraiture, and I know MM will not accept that. Though if you want to you could apply as a model with a far less stringent membership requirement. That way you could interact with some models and later register as a photographer after getting a few shoots in.
