Permissions when it comes to taking photos of peoples cars

When photographing cars, do you need to have a release form to have photo published? I enjoy taking photos of cars and most cases I don't bother to ask the owners. These cars might be in a parking lot or on side of street in front of parking meter. Now I don't have any photos that have been published, but some day I hope too. When that day comes, will a publisher ask for any sort of release form from the cars owner? If that being the case, especially when a car is parked on the side of a road, I have no idea who the owner is aside form waiting for the owner to return to their car. Which of course could be hours or even days. So do they require and if so, how have you made this work when taking photos of random cars?

You do not specify locale. Laws vary from place to place.

For the US, it is perfectly permissible to take a photograph of someone or something in a public setting, as there is no "reasonable expectation of privacy". You should be able to sell that image to a customer. It's likely you may sell that image to a publisher or stock agency, especially if there is nothing unusual or unique about the automobile. Or perhaps not. Difficult to say. But I've never heard of needing a release form for an object like a car.

I take car pics all the time, never had a release. I do however, blank out the plate numbers if I post shots online. Car shows are the best.... ;)

Why so serious?

You can take photos in public places but the usage of those photos is what you need to consider. You're talking about using photos you took of something that belongs to someone else; there are property releases for such usage although I'm not sure if it refers to just a house or building or includes someone's car.

If you're going to try to have photos published you'd need to get some professional information. This says that you should expect to produce a release whenever you license a photo -

There are other professional photographers organizations besides ASMP that also have resources available.
