Better improved pixel vs more pixels?

Not to ask a dumb question, but why not improve and create better pixels vs higher number of pixels in cameras?

I think that's happening. Newer cameras usually have better low-light performance, which is a direct result of improvements in the sensor.

An additional factor is the sensor size. Given physical constraints, there's a limit on what can be done (although I'm not sure we're there yet). But some customers think that quantity is primary, when quality is critical as well. For the higher end cameras I think that speed is a very important factor which will mitigate some of these issues (for a while still).

(Not a dumb question at all.)

Why either, when its obvious camera makers are doing both?

Why so serious?

MP are so over rated these days. Most people don't need a 45 MP camera

True and (since no current DSLR has 45MP) most people who need that will turn to Medium format.

Also most people don't really need the 36MP of the D800/e but if you shoot with those MP you can do a LOT with image. The D800/e has the most versatile files I've ever worked with and reducing down the size can make high ISO performance VERY good.

That said, I switched to 18MP and I'm not missing the extra resolution much apart from how cool it is to be able to zoom in like crazy (example attached).

Normal:

100% crop:

400iso on the D800e (70-200 2.8... I think perhaps I had a x1.7 extender on it, I can't remember).

Isn't Canon releasing a 45MP or something like that this year?

Perhaps, apparently there's a few different prototypes out "in the wild" of varying extreme MP... if the rumours are true.
