I'm seeing a .XMP file with my Raw files and wondering what this is?

Metadata for Lightroom (ACR?). It contains all the edits you make to the raw file. The changes are non-destructive, and recreated every time you access the RAW file via LR.

There's an option LR that allows you to choose where those files are kept: in the catalog folder(s), or with the original files. Myself, I keep them out of the way, hidden in the catalog folder.

The.XMP file contains the instructions for the adjustments you made while working on a RAW file. ACR creates it and stores the adjustment instructions in that file instead of changing the original as Gary said. If you want to do away with any adjustments you made and start over, you can delete the .XMP file and it will be just like you never made any adjustments to the RAW file. That's not the way you revert an image in a normal way of course, but it will do the same thing.
