Travelling to New York from UK.....1st time

10 years 11 months ago #285481 by orion
Hi all,

Ive just booked my first holiday abroad, the last one was 24 years ago

Im travelling to New York (Lower Manhattan) in November (i know probably cold, but warmer than UK) for 10 days and was considering taking my Tamrac Expedition x6 backpack holding all my gear and laptop and tripod. Do you think this bag will be too big to carry around and to go for a smaller camera bag and put tripod in my suitcase?

Thoughts?

That's a perfect size bag for an oversea trip. It's definitely a carry on, so you'll be good.

While it may be a good option to bring all hte gear you'd want, I find that a smaller, perhaps messenger style bag is much more practical to walk around with. I pack one, empty and collapsed, in my checked bag, and set it up to go out and shoot without having to lug the whole kit every time. from Manhattan.

Long trips I would only bring a couple lenses and camera body at most. Tripod too of course.

When I travel, I only bring one camera body and one lens. This bag is nice, but I wouldn't load up full of gear.

Thanks...might bring the gear down to camera body, 2 lenses, tripod and flash....Now...do i take my laptop? If so where do i pack it? Hand luggage? Ive been told hand luggage is between 5 and 7 kgs, and travel suitcase is 20kgs. Thinking of putting tripod in suitcase, as its carbon fibre doesnt weigh so much.

At the moment not looking forward to the journey = Birmingham (UK) - Amsterdam - Detroit - La Gardia then on the way back = La Gardia - Washington DC - Paris - Birmingham (UK) :S
