What happens to a camera when the sensor goes bad?

Are there any signs that the sensor is on it's last leg? Or does it just not work one day?

No reason for question, just curious. I was reading about how long these sensors are supposed to last. And the question just jumped in my head. B)

Nikon 18-55mm VR, Nikon 70-200mm VRII f/2.8, Nikon 50mm f/1.8, Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, SB-700 & SB-800

In some cases you will get streaks of solid color or black across the image or as I had happen I got a lot of solid magenta, green and black colors flowing together with no image. If one starts going bad, you will know it. When my sensor failed it failed. One image was fine and the following ones were just a mix of solid color.

Yeah there will be no doubt when it happens. You can double check it by using another card to rule that out as the culprit. Sometime though your sensor may show more dead pixels as well as it gets near its end time.
