Signing canvas print

I have some prints that will be going into a small art exhibit and I was curious if there was a right and wrong type of pen to use when signing prints?

A bit of searching on this site and others, since the question has been asked before, reveals that

1) you don't sign a canvas print.
2) matted prints usually have a signature on the matte. A double matte works well for this.
3) If you have to sign, sign the back.
4) usually, in galleries/exhibits, there's an accompanying card that provides info on the piece.

If I were going to sign a canvas print, it would be with a pen suitable for the medium, and it would be on the edge. Not on the front.

last year I found a really super print of wild horse's by a guy that does a lot of great photo's. I have a niece and grand daughter that are horse crazy so I bought two of them and framed them for the girls. When I got them, he had signed them in huge white letter's; looked awful. But the girls liked them so I guess it worked out. My point is, when signing a photo the signature should not detract from the photo. I had someone on another photo site look at one of my framed photo's and noticed that I had signed it on the matt, said that was not a good idea, should be on the print. Well if I do sign another, I thing I'll just sign it on the back. i have seen some signatures that are very nice looking but most of us aren't that artistic and I can't see detracting from a good photo by signing it on the front. just my opinion.

Interesting. I would dare say that this person is in the minority in their position. I picked up a print at the RMNP last year, small in a 9x13 double matte, and titled and signed on the inner matte (about 1/2 inch wide). Looks great.

Worthwhile to continue looking for perspectives on this, but I agree that any signature should not detract from the print. On the image works better for paintings then for photographs.

Ansel didn't sign his prints, did he?

What I've usually seen are signatures on the mat in pencil if it's a photograph; for other types of prints or artwork it may be in the lower right corner of the piece or the mat (such as a watercolor or drawing). Sometimes a separate piece of paper may be attached to the back with information about the artwork, artist contact info. etc.

I have a pen/marker with a dual tip by Sakura that is for marking on photos but I've used it mostly to write on my proof sheets.

While I agree that most photographers do not sign their canvas prints, as an art collector as well as a canvas printer, I recommend that people do in fact sign them. A signed print or canvas says that this piece is worthy of my name. I stand behind it as an artist.

As to where and with what. I generally recommend a paint pen in either black silver or gold depending on the shot. I also don't have a preference as to where the signature is. Front lower right or on the side.

Just my 2 cents worth.
