I didn't read that whole thing, is it a point and shoot? I wonder if it has bayonet mount lenses? :-)

This is an instrument package to be installed at the focus of a much larger telescope. So it is not a self-contained camera in the normal usage of "camera". I worked with a few of these "back in the day", but none of those were so massive or so elaborate.

I don't know that a tripod would be needed. I find that shooting my F5 is easier than my D70 or my D5000. The reason is the greater weight just settle my hands. Probably want a strap to carry it though!

Well it is big for sure. But even on Mauna Kea it is limited to its use by atmospheric conditions. Granted they get much better use time because of their altitude, but they still have days where it is too soupy to do much of anything. I am guessing that since they are not utilizing adaptive optics to compensate for bed conditions. Still cool though.
