What's the meaning or purpose behind the letter "D" ?
D= digital

Yeah. "DSLR" = digital single lens reflex. Nothing more magical than that. The D in the model numbers just notates digital.

f = focal length.
Example: the diameter of the aperture designated as f/8 is equal to 1/8th of the lens focal length. (note the / in the aperture number)
