Photographing cars for dealers

10 years 5 months ago #307943 by Eddy
I'm going to hit up some of the local dealers around my house and see if they will pay me to take better shots than most of the snap shots their sales people are taking with their cell phones. My approach is going to be better photos = better informed internet buyers = more sales. I'm thinking this one light my world on fire with loads of cash, but I'm hoping to make a few bucks. Perhaps enough to cover my car payment. Do you any of you have any experience with this sort of work? I'd appreciate any advice you can give. Thank you.

P.S. how did you, or would you charge for this type of work?

There's a local dealership that keeps posting on CL, asking for a photographer to photograph autos on their lot, including moving them to and fro on the lot. They offer $5 / car.

I'm pretty sure that's the reason that can't find anyone.

Think about how much time will be invested to produce the images, and price accordingly.

I wouldn't get out of bed for $5 per car

I would not even knock on on the doors of our local dealers. Chances are they use generic images. If the model and colour is the same, who would know the difference?

Really? $5 per car. I hope that is one image only and all cars are lined up in straight line.

Sad to say but I'd totally do this for $5 per car. But same as above, they'd have to be one shot per car and all on the lot, not spread out in different locations. But I'm hard up for cash so what do I know.

If all the cars where close by one another and it was just one shot per car and no less than 60 cars. At $5 per car, one shot I would do this. That would be a quick $300 bucks

This wouldn't be a one shot per car deal. They would want multiple shots of side, front, rear and interior. I would say it would mean a minimum of 10 to 15 shots per car. If you shot one every 10 minutes, this would be 30 bucks an hour. Get that down to 5 minutes per car and you are at 60 per hour. That's not great but it beats a lot of other things you could do. I would want to set a minimum on the number of cars to be shot. Wouldn't make the trip for 4 or 5 cars.

Sadly, the ad I saw (can't locate it again) also said that the photographer would be moving the cars around on the lot: get them, shoot them, put them back. I'm thinking a minimum of 15 minutes per car, probably more, by the time you get the keys, find the car, move it, shoot it, put it back, return the keys, and move on to the next.

There's no $30 / hour here, in my opinion. It's an outrageous request.
