Anyone damage a rented lens?

10 years 5 months ago #310407 by Joan Barnes
I'm going to rent some lenses that I'm interested in and want to test. This is my first time renting and I just had a 'Boy that would be horrible thought' about damaging one of these lenses. Have any of you accidentally damaged a lens that you rented and had to pay for it?

You need to read the Ts & Cs of the rental agreement and see if any of them include a waiver. Part of renting is buying insurance to cover damage to the device. But each purveyor may be different, so I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all answer here.

I did notice that and honestly wasn't sure. I don't hold insurance companies with high respect. And honestly you can't be sure enough today. I figured if I posted a thread like this, all the 'Bewares' would surface.

I have zero experience renting a lens, but I'd ask them upfront. I had that same thought because I'm thinking about renting one for Comic Con next year and things can get pretty crazy there.

I think that's an issue for the rental company, insofar as, if there is coverage, it's between them and the insurer. Not you, unless stated otherwise.

So read your contract carefully.

:agree:

For example here's what Borrowlenses says:

14. Damage Waiver.
BorrowLenses.com offers Lessee the option to purchase a damage waiver for unintentional damage to the Equipment during the Rental Period. The determination of whether damage is unintentional and not abuse is at the sole discretion of BorrowLenses.com. In the event of damage covered by a damage waiver, the insured Lessee will pay BorrowLenses.com a deductible amounting to 12% of the value of an item in similar condition to the Equipment rented to Lessee. Valuation of the Equipment is within the sole discretion of BorrowLenses.com. A damage waiver does not cover lost or stolen items. A damage waiver does not cover water damage as that is considered to fall under the category of Lessee negligence. Also, any peripheral items in Lessee's rental are not covered including lens hoods, battery chargers, front and rear caps, cables, etc. If Lessee loses and/or damages these items, Lessee will need to pay for them to be replaced even if Lessee purchases a damage waiver.

Take out the optional insurance and you'll be fine

Read the fine print. If you have questions or not clear on what that fine print reads, ask and fully understand. Most lens rental places have good coverage that will cover for accidental damage or lost.

There's a video out there that showed a shooter who dropped a 600mm Canon lens into a pool. I'm sure he was thankful for having that insurance
