Thinking about 64GB card

10 years 5 months ago #310511 by Robert Chen
These are coming down on price and I think I might get one. I'm just thinking about how long it would take to fill a 64gb card and danger of losing my photos. I'm just on fence and looking to be nudged either way.

Nikon D300 24-70mm f2.8
70-200mm f2.8
50mm f1.4 & 50mm f1.8
105mm f2.8
2 SB800

I copy all the images off of my cards as soon as I get a chance. Since a 32GB card holds over a thousand RAW files from my D5100 I'm sticking with that. I don't find changing cards to be that annoying for the type of work I do.

64GB cards are nice because you (usually) can shoot all day and not worry about running out of space. If your camera has two card slots you can back up your photos as you shoot too, for double the safety.

When I shoot, I shoot with two identical 64GB cards shooting RAW to both.

Wow, 64 GB i.e. abt 2.000 RAW-files or more.
What interesting and long lasting jobs (10, 12 hours) with mostly action-shoots for high FPS
you must have that you need to do so many shots on one day.

For doing videos with your DSLR 64 GB makes a sense for me, for photos - no.

I'm happy with 32gb cards right now

Me too. I've got two 32 GB cards in my D7100 & my D300 has a 16GB card (since it has less mp, it's all I need in that body)

Ok , ill admit it, im paranoid, I never shoot with anything over 16 gigs, typically I use 8 gig cards, shots are way to valuable to risk a whole editorial or project on one card. I typically shoot till Im ready for a break, throw the card into a portable back up and carry on with the next card, that way I always have 2 full copies outside of the camera body I store the cards in a my pocket and the drive in my bag, so even if all my gear is stolen, lost, rained on, etc and I only have the shirt on my back, lol, my shots are safe and my client is happy.

Video, medium format and perhaps action sports maybe 64. Dual slots are awesome but all your files are still in one location

I'm in the same boat, I think I'll stick with my 8 and 16's and not have all my eggs in one basket

I might one day, but it's not high up on my priority list right now. Largest card I have right now is a 32GB. I have 3 and 4 16GB. This is working for me now.

Canon 7D w/grip, Canon 40D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro; Sigma 70-300mm f2.8; Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro; Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6

It's not just the 64gb cards that are getting tempting it's the 128gb cards too. I have been eyeing the SanDisk 128 and it's price has been dropping every couple months it seems. I'm holding out till holiday sales or black Friday to be specific.

It's important to know the maximum card size that your camera will support. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Really? Cameras have a limit on size of memory card you can use? Or you talking about buffer speed vs transfer rate?

Canon 7D, 18-55mm, 55-250mm, 70-200mm L f/2.8, 100mm and 17-55mm f/2.8

No, I'm referring to a possible maximum size that the firmware may support. Check your documentation / specs.
