When is touching your clients OK?

10 years 5 months ago #315741 by Allen Carrel
Are there any scenarios when it's OK to touch your clients for getting them into the pose you want? You all helped me with some posing questions last week and now I have read you shouldn't touch your clients when moving them around. I'm wondering when can you touch them? If you want to move their shoulders into position, is that OK? I'm guessing the obvious answer is to ask them if OK to touch them. But I thought if you asking that over and over might get creepy?

Ask first. After that I think permission has been granted.

I like to demonstrate what I have in mind; I did that just last at a family shoot, and had to show the wife how I wanted her to get in close to her husband (I know both of them). It was cozy :-)

Demonstrating works best for me and you don't need to cross that bridge often

:agree:
Though for me most of the models I ever had were people I knew. I never did it for pay, just for fun, and learning to shoot people. I still never touched them though, as I could always tell them what I needed.

If I do, I ask and always make sure they see my hands coming. If they are kids, I always ask their parents then I communicate with the kids about what I want them to do.

I never do, I will always show them what I need them to be doing. Put the camera down and go stand in their place or how ever you have them posing.

I always demonstrate or touch the props to get the to pose how I want them to. For example I used to do those silly western themed portrait sittings and I'd tip their rifles to the angle I wanted them for the shot and they would follow suit. Occasionally I'd touch their fingers, maybe a hand, but nothing else. To get them to turn their heads I'd have them follow my finger until it was at the angle I wanted it. My favorite clients were the ones that'd come in and tell me to do what I needed. I'd position them exactly how I needed them. No fuss.

Basically I ask them to do it themselves (fix whatever). If I need to do it I ask. If I think it's inappropriate I use Photoshop to fix it later :P

Ask, got it. Thank you all for the variety of answers. I'm liking the idea of getting so much feedback. Makes making decisions easier!
