Best vantage point for New York City cityscape?

10 years 3 months ago #334421 by Damon
I'm traveling up to NYC next weekend and would like to get some good cityscapes of the Big Apple.  Where are the best locations to get these shots?

Also are these accessible at night too?  I think I would like to try to get a few shots at night.

There's a park under the Brooklyn Bridge, opposite Manhattan that's very popular. Lots of fine vantage points and a great nighttime photo opportunity. Just do NOT go alone in the eve.....;)

Why so serious?

Top of the Empire State building gives you a good 360 view.  You could try to stitch them all together too.

+1. You might try walking there on the Bridge, which brings you to some nice angles. BUT: take the Staten Island Ferry, and shoot from there. The Statue of Liberty is a bonus!
You might also consider taking the Circle Line tour which goes up to the UN and up on the west side to the GW bridge for some less frequently seen angles.
And there's a spot at 43rd and Fifth from which you get a great view of the Chrysler Building, the most beautiful in Manhattan.
And the skating rink at Rockefeller Center is worth trying, if you can find a spot to shoot from that isn't mobbed...
Have fun!

Jump over to the New Jersey side of the Hudson and take photos of the skyline from there.

"Top of the Rock" at Rockefeller center gives great views of Manhattan from WITHIN Manhattan. It's better than the top of the Empire State Building in my opinion because not many people know about it so there's a significantly smaller line to get to the top. You can also gets shots with the Empire State Building in it from the Top of the Rock, which you can't do when you're on top of the ESB itself.

Outside of Manhattan I recommend Roosevelt Island. It's a little sliver of land in the river with great views. The Staten Island Ferry gives some great vantage points from the water, too, but it's shaky and your gear could get wet from splashes from the water. If you are willing to risk it though, Staten Island Ferry is great. It was free when I want in 2007, but I heard they are planning on charging for it. Don't know if they actually did it or not. If not the Staten Island Ferry is really one of the best hidden attractions in the whole city. Free amazing views and a nice little trip to NYC's "forgotten burough." Granted when I was there I didn't really explore Staten Island. I just hopped off the ferry and got right back on but I only had a week in the city and had way too many other things to see.

A bad day at the race track is better than a good day in the office
