How often are you reformating your memory card?

I just want to point out to the less experienced people here. There's a difference between deleting all your images on the card and formatting. Basically speaking, deleting tells the computer to forget about the images (and you camera will "forget" too). Then you can use that space again for new photos.

ALSO just deleting doesn't actually get rid of the files, you can (if need be) recover files after deleting.

FORMATTING on the other hand, is wiping your card. IT overrites your card and clears it of all data (when done in camera, the camera will place the necessary folders on the card after it formats).

After you format the card it is basically impossible to get the data back (or very hard) as it's been wiped out.

That's why I don't think you need to format all the time. Deleting will do most of the time and formatting the card isn't really giving you any benefit (Unless perhaps your card gets corrupted some how and for some reason formatting will correct it...).

Note: I do format occasionally, just to avoid any file structure errors that might have crept in, but this is a rare possibility IMHO so I don't really feel a worry if I just delete what's on the card. Then if I delete something by mistake, I can get it back using recovery software (so long as I don't wipe over that "hidden" photo with another one.

Same here :agree:

:agree:
But AFTER I back up the PC to an external hard drive. I like the double protection.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Ha, Whats reformat? I do, but once in a blue moon. Or if I am having issues with the card. I know I should do it more often, I just don't. No reason why, I just don't think about it.

Right, you don't need to format your card each time. Deleting is good enough.
