New Photo Detail Page?

10 years 2 months ago #347773 by PixieBlue
I noticed that when I click on one of my images and it shows the details of the photo, i.e. how many "likes," "views," etc. there now is a social media selection bar in the upper right hand corner.  One of my photos in particular has 7 shares to FB and 7 to SU (which I've never heard of but it's 'Stumbled Upon'?).   Is there anyway I can block viewers from sharing my images?  I did get permission from the people in the photo to post here, however, not to share on any other media sites.  Hopefully this won't be an issue as the photo isn't tagged with a person's name, so privacy should be protected.  In the future I guess I need to let people know that if I do post their photo there is a probability that it may be shared on other social media sites.

If there is a way to block this type of sharing, please advise.  Thank you,
Amy

I might be wrong, but I do believe the photos are simply linked to from these other sites.  Which means if someone clicks on the image it will open up on your page here.

When an image is made available in an open forum, you completely lose control over it. It's accessible and can be copied or referenced by any server on the web.

FB has some control insofar as you can limit visibility of an image to "friends of friends", etc, and you'd have to have a FB account in order access the image. But PT doesn't work that way.

That ship left the dock.

Thank you for the feedback.  I wish that PT would allow the option, when uploading a photo, to keep it exclusive to PT only.  I noticed that complete strangers "pinned" two of my photos to Pintrist, of which I'm not a member....that site seems pretty benign, but you never know how it connects to the "Google" monster, which I'm feeling is really breaching security of its' users, especially with the acquisition of, 'Nest.'  Well, that is a whole other topic in and of itself.....

Again, thank you for your responses.

This is why I do not post photos to forum galleries if they are provided, as a general rule. I have one here for my background in my profile, and that is it.

I gotcha.  I didn't notice before that you don't have any PT albums.  I guess all photos sites are the same, like Flickr as well, all are open to sharing?  Do you have any safe online sites where you show your images?  Right now the safest place I have photos seems to be Facebook (believe it or not).  There is no way to share them to another site.  Oh well, I guess I will just be careful with any shots of family and friends from here on out.

Thanks, Joves.

All websites are the same, and no photos are safe.  That's why when I do upload photos they are small and low resolution.  If someone wants them, good for them.

You are welcome. None of the free sites are the least bit secure when it comes to posting on them. I have my Zenfolio site which I setup so it is secure against the majority of people. With the normal precautions of disabling rick clicking, but that only works for the majority. I also do not enable the sharing on my open galleries, I do have hidden ones for that. With Zen you could get a base account, and then have your open galleries viewable to the public, and private galleries that you assign a password to that would allow your family&friends to view, and even print, or share if you choose to allow it. Then you can restrict the size they can share as well, if you chose to. I am not sure what a basic Zen site costs. I have the lower tier pro account that allows the selling of photos if I was not too lazy to set it up. That account is $120 a year for me now, and will stay at that for as long as I have it. But in reality the free sites are never really free, they will cost you in some way shape, or form in the end.

When I was first a member on here I could set up albums so that only people that I added as Friends on here could view them. Once that option was gone and there was no way to block anyone from taking my photos and posting them on social media sites I removed all my photos from here.

A secure site that allows you to select who may view your photos seems to be the only reasonably secure option. I have select photos on my Flickr page and have it set only for friends to view (not set to public) but I don't even use that much. I post on a very limited basis on Facebook for friends, and size down to a low res watermarked copy - later I remove them, I don't leave them on the site.

Terms & Conditions come into it too for me when deciding whether or not to use a site or how much or little to post on a site. I feel like my photos are my property, and my effort, time and ability went into them, it's up to me who views or uses my photos.

Thanks Dennis for the info. on Zenfolio, I've known other people to use it, seems like it might be a good option.

Thank you, as well, for additional info regarding Flickr and tips on posting photos to FB.  Yes, Dennis ALWAYS has great advice/input, no matter what the topic.:)

Richard, do you convert to jpeg and resize before uploading?  Do you add a water mark as well?
I guess you are right, if someone really wants a photo they will get it no matter how they do it; maybe I should relax and take it as a compliment.

Thank you Sharon for sharing your experience with different media sites.  I think I will now begin the process of removing my photos from PT and just keep my favorite as my cover photo.
